A man beaten with a tire iron on a St. Paul street has died three weeks later, according to charges.
The death Sunday at Regions Hospital of James Dale Thurber, 54, of St. Paul, means Daniel Pen-Mong Moua is now charged with second-degree murder as well as first-degree assault.
Moua, 20, of St. Paul, remains jailed with his next court appearance yet to be scheduled. The Minnesota Star Tribune reached out Thursday to his attorney for a response to the allegations.
According to the criminal complaint:
A 911 caller alerted police to one man attacking another shortly before noon on July 13 in the 600 block of E. Hyacinth Avenue in the Payne-Phalen neighborhood.
Officers arrived and saw an unconscious Thurber on the ground and bleeding heavily from the head. Moua was standing over Thurber while another man applied pressure to the wound in an effort to stop the bleeding.
The man said Moua and Thurber used to collect scrap metal together but had a falling out.
Moua told the officers he was sitting in a van near his home on Hyacinth and saw Thurber walking down the street. Moua said his dog does not like Thurber and had gotten loose. He said he put his dog in his garage and returned to see Thurber down on the sidewalk, possibly from falling.
