STEWARTVILLE, Minn. — The man who shot and injured high school wrestler in the school parking lot here, then died of a self-inflicted gunshot wound early Friday morning has been identified as a former student.

It was still unclear why Logan Moyer, 19, was at the school, Olmsted County Sheriff Kevin Torgerson said at a news conference Monday morning. Moyer, a former wrestler, graduated in 2024 and was not a coach, volunteer or aide for the team, Torgerson added.

The injured wrestler, who was not named, was still hospitalized in critical but stable condition as of Sunday night, officials said.

The shooting happened around 5 a.m. Friday as a bus was getting ready to transport the school’s wrestling team to a meet.

While authorities said Friday the incident didn’t initially appear to be random, Torgerson said Monday that a motive was still unclear.

“We don’t know why and we may not ever know why,” he said.

About 40 wrestlers and coaches were supposed to travel, Torgerson said Friday, adding that most of the students on the bus didn’t know what happened. Several people heard a gunshot and found a member of the wrestling team injured.

The sheriff revealed Monday that the shooting took place about 100 yards away from the bus in the school’s parking lot. At the time of the shooting, the wrestlers were either on the bus or weighing themselves inside.

Classes resumed Monday under a late-start schedule. School staff members were expected to attend meetings with principals and counseling staff. Law enforcement and additional mental health support were slated to be on hand at every district school.

Stewartville Public Schools Superintendent Belinda Selfors said at the Monday news conference that student safety, wellbeing and emotional health are the highest priority.

“We continue to ask you to lift us up in prayer for courage, strength and healing in the days and weeks ahead,” Selfors said.

Selfors said the team plans to compete for the remainder of the season, but its immediate schedule was tentative.

The Stewartville Wrestling Booster Club has raised more than $35,000 in an online fundraiser over the weekend for the victim’s and Moyer’s families, saying the money will go toward helping the families.

The Stewartville school district canceled high school and middle school classes Friday as word of the shooting spread. Shootings in the city 12 miles south of Rochester are “very rare,” Torgerson said at a news conference that day.
