DFL Gov. Tim Walz has endorsed Minneapolis Mayor Jacob Frey in his bid for re-election to a third term, despite Frey’s recent failure to secure the party’s backing.
“Mayor Frey is a partner I can trust to actually deliver progressive policies that improve people’s lives,” Walz said Thursday in a statement released by Frey’s campaign.
“Jacob has helped make Minneapolis a national leader on issues like housing, and I’ve been proud to work with him to deliver funding to hire more police officers and fight violent crime.”
Frey, who also won Walz’s endorsement in 2021, said in a statement that he was honored to have the governor’s backing “and grateful for his partnership in making Minneapolis a safer and more affordable city for all.”
Election Day is Nov. 4.
The endorsement gives Frey a needed boost after the Minneapolis DFL Party endorsed state Sen. Omar Fateh, a democratic socialist, for mayor during its convention on July 19.
It was the first time in 16 years the Minneapolis DFL has endorsed a candidate for mayor. Frey is contesting the results on the basis that votes were not recorded from hundreds of delegates and alternates who had checked into the convention.
