Gophers split on diamond: baseball team wins, softball team loses

Baseball team wins first game of its weekend series with Penn State.

The Gophers baseball team won its last home game of the season, beating Penn State 8-2 at the Metrodome. The U's big inning was the seventh. Right fielder Bobby Juan hit a three-run homer and second baseman Mike Handel followed with a solo shot.

The Nittany Lions had won the first two games of the series.

SOFTBALL: PURDUE IN ROUT

Visiting Purdue clobbed the Gophers 12-2 in five innings. Backup pitcher Alissa Koch started for the 'U' and gave up seven runs before being relieved in the third inning. Freshman Erica Meyer hit a two-run homer, her seventh of the season, for the Gophers.
