The No. 10 Gophers soccer team will play No. 16 Penn State at 7 p.m. Friday in its Big Ten opener at Robbie Stadium in St. Paul.

The Nittany Lions (4-2-1) are the defending NCAA and Big Ten champions. The Gophers (6-2) are the only team in the Big Ten to have beaten Penn State twice in the past three seasons, including 1-0 last season on the road.

Simone Kolander, a senior forward, leads the Gophers in scoring with seven goals and three assists for a conference-leading 17 points. Sophomore forward April Bockin has five goals and one assist. Goalkeeper Tarah Hobbs has 22 saves in eight games and a .759 save percentage.

Angler Feider in second

Seth Feider of Bloomington, the only Minnesotan in the Toyota Angler of the Year bass fishing tournament on Lake Mille Lacs, was tied for second place Thursday after the first day of competition.

Feider caught five fish weighing 25 pounds, 8 ounces as did Jason Williamson of Wagener, S.C. The leader was Takahiro Omori of Emory, Texas, with a catch of 26-7.

Brent Ehrler of Redlands, Calif., was fourth (25-5) and Matt Herren of Ashville, Ala., was fifth (23-14).

Two golf upsets

Steve Whitlock of Oak Marsh defeated Dale Jones, the second seed of Mendakota, 2 up in the championship match of the 2016 Minnesota PGA Senior Match Play Championship on Thursday at Stillwater Country Club.

But that wasn't his biggest upset of the day. In the semifinals, Whitlock, seeded 13th in the field of 15, beat defending champion and top seed Don Berry of Edinburgh USA 2 up by sinking a 10-foot birdie putt on the 18th hole.
