PITTSBURGH — San Francisco Giants manager Bruce Bochy and reliever George Kontos have been suspended after Kontos threw at Pittsburgh Pirates star Andrew McCutchen on Tuesday night.

Kontos was suspended three games and fined while Bochy will sit out Wednesday night's game against Pittsburgh. Bench coach Ron Wotus will fill in for Bochy.

Kontos threw behind Pirates outfielder Starling Marte in the seventh inning then drilled McCutchen in the eighth and was ejected. The Pirates went on to win 8-2. Kontos was optioned to Triple-A Fresno on Wednesday morning. He can appeal the suspension, which he would serve whenever he is recalled if it is upheld. The right-hander is 2-1 with a 5.76 ERA and 28 strikeouts in 29 2-3 innings this season.

The Giants replaced Kontos with right-handed reliever Sandy Rosario.
