General Mills recalls batch of mislabeled granola bars

September 27, 2012 at 2:47AM

General Mills Inc. said Wednesday that it is recalling a batch of Nature Valley granola bars because of a packaging error in which peanuts, a potential allergen, aren't listed on some boxes' labels.

The Golden Valley-based packaged food maker voluntarily recalled a day's worth of production of its Almond Nature Valley Sweet & Salty Nut Granola Bars. The recall includes only six-count boxes of the product with the "Better if Used By" date of "26FEB2013" printed on top.

The recall affected 1,200 boxes of the almond granola bars.

A "limited number" of properly labeled Peanut Nature Valley Sweet & Salty Nut Granola Bars were improperly inserted into boxes of an almond version of the product, the company said in a statement.

The recall is "Class I," meaning the recalled product could cause serious health problems. Undeclared allergens are often a cause of Class I recalls because people with food allergies can have severe reactions.
