An online fundraising campaign on behalf of the family of Alex Pretti, who was fatally shot in Minneapolis during a confrontation with federal immigration officers on Jan. 24, has raised more than $1.6 million and drew a big donation from an activist investor who gave to a fundraising effort for the officer who killed Renee Good three weeks ago.
Hedge fund manager Bill Ackman, who has challenged management over the years at large companies, including Minneapolis-based Target, gave $10,000 to the GoFundMe account started on behalf of Pretti’s father, Michael Pretti.
Ackman gave the same amount to the GoFundMe effort for Ross, explaining on X that “I am big believer in our legal [principle] that one is innocent until proven guilty.”
He added that he wanted to “similarly support the GoFundMe for Renee Good’s family. [However] her GoFundMe was closed by the time I attempted to provide support.”
There had been roughly 40,000 donations made to the Pretti fundraiser as of late afternoon on Jan. 27.
The Good campaign collected nearly $1.5 million on more than 38,000 donations. The top contribution was one for $50,000 that was made anonymously.
The Ross fundraiser has more than $790,000 in donations thanks to more than 16,700 donations.
