Our little brother, Ben, is 10. He has never seen a Major League Baseball game for a variety of reasons, including: 1) He wasn' t much of a baseball fan until a couple of years ago. 2) He lives in Grand Forks, N.D., which is 5 hours from the nearest baseball stadium. 3) For the first 10 years of his life, even if we wanted to take him to a baseball game, the only ballpark within reasonable distance was the Metrodome.
That all changes tonight. He and Dad are coming to town, and we are heading to the Twins/Royals tilts both tonight and tomorrow. Ben's first game will be at Target Field, and the slated opposing pitcher is one of the best (and his favorites) in the game: Zack Greinke. How cool is that?
Dad tried to keep it a secret, and he developed this elaborate plan whereby it would seem as though he was just taking Ben to school like a normal day, only to keep on going all the way to Minneapolis. But he crumbled somewhere along the way and had to give it up. When Ben asked about the tickets for the weekend, Dad told him, "Well, for the first game we're sitting in the outfield. And for the other game we're by third base." It apparently didn't register with Ben right away, but after about five seconds he said, "WAIT! We're going to MORE THAN ONE GAME!"
We'll almost assuredly report back Monday with an account of how MORE THAN ONE GAME went. For now, we throw open the comments for a discussion of your first baseball game, or a time when you witnessed someone at their first game. Doesn't get much better than that, does it?
