The National League changed about one-third of its pitching staff Sunday.
San Francisco's Tim Hudson, Cincinnati's Alfredo Simon, San Diego's Huston Street and Washington's Tyler Clippard were added to the roster for Tuesday's All-Star game at Target Field. They replaced four pitchers who started Sunday: the Giants' Madison Bumgarner, the Reds' Johnny Cueto, the Padres' Tyson Ross and Atlanta's Julio Teheran.
Pitchers who start the Sunday before the All-Star Game have the option to be replaced on the active roster. On Saturday, Tampa Bay ace David Price bowed out of the American League roster after pushing his start back to Sunday. He was replaced by Seattle closer Fernando Rodney.
Hudson, a four-time All-Star, is 7-6 with a 2.87 ERA in his first season with the Giants. San Francisco manager Bruce Bochy had indicated Saturday that one of his other starters would replace Bumgarner on the NL roster, and that starter proved to be the 38-year-old Hudson, who first appeared in an All-Star Game in 2000.
Simon, a 33-year-old from the Dominican Republic, is 12-3 with a 2.70 ERA in his first season as a starter with the Reds after pitching the previous two years out of the bullpen. He was prepared for the announcement, with Fox Sports Ohio reporting Simon had his bags packed for the Twin Cities in the event of his selection.
The 30-year-old Street, who was also selected an All-Star in 2012, has 24 saves and a 1.09 ERA this season and 258 saves in 10 big-league seasons.
Clippard, 29, is an All-Star setup man for the second time in his career, having also been picked in 2011. He is 6-2 with a 2.03 ERA in 43 appearances.
"It's a give and take. Obviously, I'm honored and happy in that sense," Clippard said Sunday before laughing and adding, "I'd like to go get some rounds of golf in, but I'll take one for the team."
