Former Minneapolis Public Works Director Robin Hutcheson will take over as chair of the Metropolitan Council in December, filling the vacancy created this fall when Charlie Zelle stepped down, Gov. Tim Walz announced Tuesday.
Hutcheson will assume the role leading the regional planning agency for the Twin Cities metro area, which is currently filled by interim chair Deb Barber.
Walz called Hutcheson a “proven leader” who has worked to improve road safety and the quality of life and bring people together.
“From leading national transportation policy to improving infrastructure here in Minnesota, she has shown what it means to lead with collaboration, innovation, and heart,” Walz said in a statement. “Her extensive experience will be invaluable as the Metropolitan Council continues its work to build a stronger, more connected, and more equitable region for all Minnesotans.”
Hutcheson previously served as the public works director for Minneapolis from 2016 to 2021, overseeing the city’s traffic, trash and vehicle services. Nationally, Hutcheson served as a deputy assistant secretary of transportation for safety policy in the U.S. Department of Transportation during the Biden administration. She also was deputy administrator and administrator of the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration.
She has also worked as the director of transportation for Salt Lake City and president of the board of directors of the National Association of City Transportation Officials.
“The Metropolitan Council plays a vital role in shaping the future of our region and I am deeply honored to be appointed by Governor Walz to serve as its Chair,” Hutcheson said. “I look forward to working alongside dedicated Council members, staff, local leaders, and residents to create opportunity for every community we serve.”
Hutcheson’s term will expire on Jan. 4, 2027.
