For Imation Corp., one big byte of data

July 16, 2008 at 3:59AM

Imation Corp. achieved a milestone this week with the introduction of its first data storage tape capable of storing 1 terabyte of data on a single cartridge.

The tape cartridge, made to work inside Sun StorageTek's new T10000B drive system, can store 300 million pages of text on a single tape.

That's enough pages of text to loop the Earth three times.

Imation and Fuji are the first ones to cross the 1 terabyte mark. The feat is expected to benefit corporate and government customers that back up massive amounts of computer data daily. For example, Oakdale-based Imation backs up 3 terabytes of data every day.
