Twin Cities-based Great Clips Inc. today announced that it will open 300 salons this year and next throughout North America.

"Our aggressive growth plans are part of Great Clips' North American development strategy, which includes expanding in existing markets while entering new cities," Ray Barton, chief executive officer and chairman, said in a statement from the Edina company.

Great Clips currently has more than 2,700 walk-in salons operating in more than 130 markets. They employ about 30,000 people.

"The Great Clips business concept has proven to be recession-resistant, simple and enjoys a steady growth rate," said Rob Goggins, vice president of franchise development for Great Clips.

Established in 1982, Great Clips describes itself as North America's "largest franchisor under one brand" in the $55 billion-a-year hair care industry.
