After guiding Osseo to 74 victories in 11 seasons, Derrin Lamker can put one in his personal win column at Edina.
The seventh-ranked Hornets scored touchdowns on their first four possessions in Lamker's first game as head coach Thursday en route to a season-opening 34-9 victory over Lakeville South at Kuhlman Stadium.
"It's exciting not just to win but to see the kids play to their abilities," Lamker said. "They know what they can do and we hope it can continue."
Hornets workhorse running back Matt Cavanagh capped off a game-opening 18-play drive with a 1-yard plunge across the goal line. The junior scored on a 3-yard run on Edina's second drive and from 12 yards out for touchdown No. 3. Cavanagh, a starting safety for the Edina defense last season, finished with 202 yards on 41 carries.
"The O-line is the strength of our team and it's always great to play behind them," Cavanagh said. "I'm excited I get to play running back this year."
Edina senior Anders Nelson made two third-down catches to keep early scoring drives alive. He outjumped Lakeville South's defensive back for a 2-yard score in the final seconds of the first half, putting Edina in front 27-3.
Lakeville South scored on its opening drive on a 22-yard field goal by John Olson and an 11-yard touchdown run by Jeremiah Johnson on the first drive of the second half.
