Daylight gunfire hit the Herb Brooks National Hockey Center at St. Cloud State University while roughly 100 people were inside, officials said Monday.

Police said no one was wounded in the gunfire that struck a second-floor window Sunday, and they do not believe the hockey center was the intended target.

The hockey center is the home of St. Cloud State’s men’s and women’s hockey teams as well as St. John’s University men’s team. Ice on the center’s main and practice rinks is also rented out by teams at other levels.

“The center was occupied by several hockey groups on each ice sheet throughout the afternoon,” said Brandie Yale, vice president for strategic and presidential communications.

“In all, approximately 100 players, coaches and staff [were inside],” Yale said. “No evacuation took place, as no one was aware of the incident taking place until later when the police found the bullet. No one was in the area where the window was broken.”

Officers were dispatched to the center shortly after 2 p.m. and determined that about five shots from a handgun had been fired in the area by one or more unknown suspects, police said. No arrests have been announced.

Police said that anyone with information about the incident is urged to contact them at 320-251-1200, or reach out to Tri-County Crime Stoppers at 800-255-1301 or tricountycrimestoppers.org.
