Restricted free agent Darroll Powe has agreed to terms on a 3-year, $3.2 million contract ($1.067 AAV). Contract is not signed or filed yet. Powe could have filed for arbitration later today. This contract buys his last restricted year and two unrestricted free-agency years.
The Wild acquired Powe from the Philadelphia Flyers on June 27 for a 2013 third-round pick.
"Yeosie, the way he coaches, he wants a couple skill lines, but he wants his role lines to bring energy and not be easy to play against," Wild assistant GM Brent Flahr, referring to coach Mike Yeo, said at the time of the trade.
"And Darroll Powe isn't the easiest guy to play against. He really gets in on the forecheck and disrupts things and throws big hits. I'm sure he'll be a coach's pet by the end of the year and a fan favorite before long."
A popular player in Philly who can play left wing or center, Powe, 26, played three seasons for the Flyers after signing as a free agent out of Princeton in 2007. He quickly gained a reputation as a hard-hitting, super-fast, tremendously responsible player.
A top penalty killer, Powe logged the second-most shorthanded minutes amongst Flyers forwards (257) and led the Flyers with 196 hits. It's the physical game where the Saskatoon native made his niche.
The other restricted free agents should be signed soon. Most may just accept their qualifying offers.
I'll be on 1500 ESPN at 2:20 p.m. CT today.
