Coaches honor Gagliardi with Amos Alonzo Stagg Award

St. John's football coach John Gagliard has a new accolade to add to his long list of accomplishments.

On Wednesday, he was named the recipient of the American Football Coaches Association's Amos Alonzo Stagg Award.

The award is presented each year to a person "whose services have been outstanding in the advancement of the best interests of football."

The award presentation will be Jan. 13 in Nashville.

Past winners include Joe Paterno, Bo Schembechler, Woody Hayes, Paul (Bear) Bryant and Eddie Robinson.

Gagliardi said it's nice to be included in that group, although he said he probably doesn't belong there.

The association apparently disagrees. Gagliardi, 81, is in his 56th season at St. John's. His 455 victories are the most in college football history.

Fernando Mendoza lowered his pads into a defender, spun in a full circle, used his hand to keep his balance, then launched himself horizontally and reached the ball over the goal line — an Indiana touchdown and a ready-made poster pic for a title run straight from the movies.
