Sheriff’s deputy shoots and kills man after car chase in Bagley, Minn.

The events began after a deputy recognized a man at a gas station with a felony warrant for his arrest.

A deputy with the Clearwater County Sheriff’s Office shot and killed a man who fired a projectile at officers after leading them on a car chase in northwestern Minnesota on Thursday, the sheriff’s office said.

In a news release, the sheriff’s office said the events began at 12:12 p.m., when a deputy recognized a man at a gas station in Bagley who had a felony warrant out for his arrest.

The deputy’s attempt to arrest him led to a physical altercation. . The man fled in a vehicle with the sheriff’s deputies and officers from the Bagley Police Department in pursuit, the release said.

The driver at times steered into oncoming traffic and twice drove across the yard of a residence, officials said.

Eventually, officers stopped the vehicle. The driver then fired a “flare-type projectile” at officers, and a deputy returned fire, striking the male, the release said.

The man died at the scene and has not been identified.

A deputy suffered a minor injury. The sheriff’s office said body cameras were activated during the incident.

The Minnesota Bureau of Criminal Apprehension is investigating.
