A 12-year-old was critically wounded when he got ahold of a gun in the middle of the night and inadvertently shot himself in a St. Paul home, officials said Monday.

The gunfire occurred about 1:30 a.m. Monday on Congress Street W. between Hall and Skyler avenues, said police spokeswoman Nikki Muehlhausen.

Muehlhausen said officers were called to the home and found the boy “had accidentally shot himself.”

The boy was taken by emergency medical responders to Regions Hospital, she said.

Police have yet to release the boy’s identity or elaborate on how he came to possess the gun.

Muehlhausen said there were no arrests as of late Monday. Anyone who allows children to have access to a gun can be charged with various felonies including manslaughter and child endangerment.
