Backup power in a small package

December 9, 2007 at 9:52PM

A company in Elk River, Cymbet Technology, began shipping its EnerChip thin-film battery products last week. Cymbet developed a solid-state, thin-film battery technology for the semiconductor industry. The EnerChip line was developed for applications where backup power is needed to maintain the settings of microcontroller memories, real-time clocks and SRAM during power loss or power failures. Products can deliver backup power for periods ranging from a few hours to several weeks, depending on the system's standby current requirements. The EnerChip line is available in capacities of 12, 50 and 85uAh and can be automatically surface mounted. The devices can recharge in 30 minutes (to 80 percent) and are capable of greater than 5,000 charge/discharge cycles.

A new needle for patients and clinicians SMITHS Medical in St. Paul has created a new safety needle design. Smiths Medical's GRIPPER Micro Safety Needle was designed to protect clinicians from needle-stick injuries and to minimize discomfort for patients. The GRIPPER Micro Safety Needle is similar to the company's GRIPPER PLUS Safety Needle but includes advances such as a low-profile infusion site and a blunt cannula. After the GRIPPER Micro needle is inserted into a patient's implanted port, the inserter is removed, leaving behind a small, low-profile infusion site with a blunt cannula, which can be used to administer medication or withdraw fluid. The inserter's safety arm "clicks" when it is lifted, assuring clinicians that the needle is locked in a safe position for disposal and protecting those who come into contact with it. The GRIPPER Micro Safety Needle is expected to be launched in the first quarter of 2008.
