FREE WOOD CHIPS, COMPOST

The public works departments of Minneapolis, St. Paul and some suburbs offer free compost and wood chips, mostly from trees trimmed or removed. Quality varies, as does availability. It's best to call for the most recent dropoffs. The websites show locations, but not availability.

• Edina: 952-826-0463, compost.

• Maple Grove: 763-420-8971, compost.

• Minneapolis: 612-370-4900 or check www.minneapolisparks.org. Wood chips at 15 sites.

• Plymouth: 763-509-5950, ext. 3, wood chips, mulch and compost.

• Ramsey County: 651-633-3279 or www.co.ramsey.mn.us/ph/rt/brush_compost_yardwaste.htm. Wood chips and compost at seven sites.

• Roseville: 651-792-7004, compost and wood chips.

• St. Louis Park: 952-924-2565, wood chips and compost.
