Timeline of Dayton's and Macy's in downtown Minneapolis

A look back at the building over the years.

January 5, 2017 at 4:21AM

1902: George Dayton builds at 7th and Nicollet Av.

1903: The existing retail store, Goodfellow's, takes the Dayton name.

1913: Addition completed.

1929: Another addition finished.

1947: The site expands to three quarters of the block and rises 12 stories.

1947: The Oak Grill and Skyroom restaurants open.

1969: Dayton's merges with Detroit-based J.L. Hudson Co.

1983: Last of the five Dayton brothers, grandsons of the founder, retire.

1990: Dayton-Hudson buys Chicago's Marshall Field's.

2000: Dayton-Hudson Corp. is renamed Target Corp.

2001: The Minneapolis store is rebranded Marshall Field's.

2004: Target Corp. sells its department stores to May Department Stores Corp.

2005: May merges with Federated Department Stores.

2006: Federated Department Stores renames the Minneapolis store Macy's.

2013: Macy's closes its downtown St. Paul store.

2015: Macy's announces commitment to preserve flagship stores including Minneapolis.

Wednesday: Macy's announces it will sell its downtown Minneapolis store to a New York investment firm for $40 million.
