No. 13 St. Cloud State gets road win over ranked foe• ST. CLOUD STATE 26, CALIFORNIA U 3: Sophomore quarterback Phillip Klaphake rushed for two touchdowns and threw for a third to lead the 13th-ranked Huskies to a season-opening victory over 12th-ranked California University in California, Penn.

St. Cloud State gained 406 yards on offense, and the Huskies limited the Vulcans to 206 yards, only 56 rushing.

Huskies sophomore linebacker Todd Bestgen had two quarterback sacks.

Klaphake finished 20-for-26 for 201 yards and one touchdown. He carried the ball 14 times for 60 yards and two touchdowns.

Wide receiver Damon Treat led the team with five catches for 56 yards and a touchdown.

NORTHERN MICHIGAN 31, MINNESOTA STATE MANKATO 24: A 28-yard touchdown pass on fourth-and-1 with 5 minutes, 30 seconds remaining broke a tie and propelled the Wildcats overt he Mavericks in Marquette, Mich.

The Mavericks drove deep into NMU territory in the final minute, but Jacob Lehmann picked off a pass by senior quarterback Jon Daniels in the end zone to seal the victory.

Senior LeMark Brown ran 10 times for 54 yards and caught five passes for 66 yards and two scores -- a 7-yarder in the second quarter and a 25-yarder in the fourth -- for Minnesota State Mankato. Dennis Carter added four catches for 62 yards and a touchdown. Daniels finished the game 16-for-25 for 195 yards and three scores.

• NORTHERN STATE 30, SOUTHWEST MINNESOTA STATE 17: The Wolves used several big offensive plays and forced three Mustangs turnovers to win in Aberdeen, S.D.

Southwest Minnesota State finished the game with 407 yards of offense and 22 first downs but had trouble converting inside the red zone. Southwest Minnesota State also threw interceptions on its first three possessions of the second half.

NORTH DAKOTA 16, DRAKE 0: Mitch Sutton ran for 105 yards and the Sioux defense sacked Bulldogs quarterback Michael Piatkowski four times in Grand Forks, N.D. Joey Bradley completed 18 of 26 passes for 137 yards and Jake Miller ran for an 11-yard score for North Dakota.

NO. 20 MISSISSIPPI STATE 59, MEMPHIS 14: Vick Ballard rushed for 166 yards and three touchdowns and the Bulldogs easily handed the host Tigers at the Liberty Bowl. Mississippi State dominated from the start, taking a 31-7 lead after gaining 405 total yards in the first half. Things slowed down a little after that, but the Bulldogs still finished with a school-record 645 total yards.

SYRACUSE 36, WAKE FOREST 29 (OT): Van Chew made a diving 4-yard touchdown catch at the goal line on the first series of overtime, and the Orange rallied past the Demon Deacons. Wake got the ball one last time, but the Syracuse defense held for one of the few times on the night and forced a fourth-down incompletion from the 19.
