Upbeat architectural services and framing sales boosted Apogee Enterprises' fiscal first quarter, creating results that beat analysts' expectations and caused officials to boost their guidance for the year.

The Bloomington-based maker of glass used in building exteriors, storefront windows and picture framing reported revenue rose 3 percent to $247.9 million during the quarter ended May 28. Profits grew 46 percent to $17.7 million, or 61 cents a share.

On average, analysts had expected first-quarter earnings of 49 cents a share and revenue of $247 million.

The company, which recently expanded in Owatonna, made the glass for the new U.S. Bank Stadium and last year nearly met its goal of producing $1 billion in annual revenue, updated its outlook for full fiscal 2017.

CEO Joseph Puishys said Wednesday that he now expects earnings per share for the year of $2.70 to $2.85, which is up from the prior outlook of $2.65 to $2.80.

The change resulted from improved operational performance in the first quarter that "we expect will continue throughout the year," Puishys said. "We are maintaining our outlook for revenue growth of approximately 10 percent."

During the quarter, Apogee's architectural glass unit, its largest division, saw sales fall 8 percent to $93.4 million as a result of a timing change for one project.

Architectural framing sales, however, rose 13 percent to $81 million. Architectural services revenue also rose 13 percent to $62.8 million during the quarter. Optical technology sales remained unchanged at $20 million.

While revenue growth varied, profits among all four divisions grew because of pricing changes, better product mix, some volume gains and improved operational performance.
