Andrew Bird returning to First Ave

The Dec. 2 show will feature his full band, unlike other winter dates and last years local church concerts.

After performing in one of Minneapolis' most ornate churches last December, Andrew Bird will return to its holiest rock venue this December: He has booked a First Avenue gig on the 2nd. Tickets ($30) go on sale this Friday at 11 a.m. through Ticketmaster and First Ave outlets, and you can bet they'll go fast (the guy has been filling theaters here in recent years). Unlike the mostly solo and intimate church shows -- which Bird is replicating in other cities this winter -- Twin Cities fans get the one and only show with his full band, whose members all live here. Two of those members, Jeremy Ylvisaker and Mike Lewis, will open the First Ave concert with their quirky, fun fuzz-rock band Alpha Consumer, which definitely wouldn't be suitable for the church gigs.

Some other First Ave winter gigs of note: Nick Cave's Grinderman will be there Nov. 23; Mason Jennings has another two-nighter planned Dec. 4-5, and Soul Asylum's regular pre-holiday show is set for Dec. 17.
