BANGKOK — Authorities have temporarily shut down an airport on Thailand's southern coast after an airplane skidded off the runway. All 142 passengers and crew on board were safe.
Rescue workers were still working to recover the Boeing 737-800 on Wednesday, a day after the flight by Thai low-cost airline Nok Air veered off the runway before takeoff in heavy rains in Trang province, 680 kilometers (420 miles) south of Bangkok.
Nok Air CEO Patee Sarasin said Wednesday that the airline was bringing equipment to lift the wheels of the plane as they were stuck in muddy soil next to the airstrip.
He says the airport will be closed and all daily flights at Trang airport will be suspended until the plane is removed from the runway.
