Larry and Fern Willson paid homage to their favorite architect, Frank Lloyd Wright, by building their own Taliesin, which is Wright's landmark home in Wisconsin.
"We've always loved his prairie-style architecture and have visited some of his homes," said Larry. "We like open design and wanted to be able to see the outdoors from inside every room."
The couple collaborated with architect Tod Drescher to build the two-story home in 1992 on nearly five wooded acres in Inver Grove Heights.
Wright-style features include a number of built-ins in a variety of woods, from cherry to white oak, a massive stone fireplace that spans three levels and deep exterior overhangs.
Although the main and second floors offer walls of windows, Larry likes to hang out in the walkout lower level. "I get a bird's-eye view of the wild turkeys, deer and other wildlife," he said.
After they sell, the Willsons plan to build another Wright-inspired home in Hudson, Wis., where they'll be closer to their family.
