The Star Tribune has been giving year-end accolades to restaurants for more than two decades as a way to recognize the work of an establishment that opened — or was substantially altered — during the previous 12 or so months. (This year, for example, we considered restaurants opened by October.)

Take a stroll down memory lane as we look at our past honorees:

2022: Mara

2021: Owamni

2020: In a crushing year for restaurants due to the pandemic, the Star Tribune focused on the bright spots in the restaurant industry.

2012: Butcher & the Boar (now under different ownership)

2011: The Bachelor Farmer (closed)

2010: Piccolo (closed)

2006: Midtown Global Market, Mill City Farmers Market, Town Talk Diner (different ownership), Chambers Kitchen (closed), Masa (closed), Copper Bleu (closed)

2005: 112 Eatery

2004: Al Vento (closed), A Rebours (closed), Corner Table (closed)

2003: Solera (closed)

From fine dining to fast casual and barbecue to pasta galore, these are our favorite new eateries. But one stands out above them all.
