Maple Grove (20-8) vs. Blake (No. 2, 22-6), 11 A.M.

Scouting the Crimson: Solid players departing high school early for other hockey opportunities deprived Maple Grove of some deft hands and quick feet. The hearts within remaining players, however, beat strong. "These kids are absolute fighters," coach Todd Bergland said. A team meeting after a three-game slump in early February brought renewed dedication. Strong team defense allowed only one goal in three playoff games. "The doubts and can'ts are gone," Bergland said. He praised goaltender Jack Wieneke for playing "his best game this season" in a 3-0 section final shutout of Blaine.

Scouting the Bears: When former Blake assistant Rob McClanahan became head coach before the season, he made it clear he was a one-year interim guy. An early-February change of heart led to McClanahan signing on indefinitely. "I realized that I'm actually OK at it," he said after leading the Bears to their first Class 2A tournament appearance. "I like it. These kids are special. And my assistant coaches make it enjoyable." The Bears' top players are junior forward Joe Miller, a Star Tribune All-Metro first-team selection, and defenseman Will Svenddal, a third-team pick.

Worth knowing: Maple Grove beat visiting Blake 5-4 in overtime in the regular-season finale. "That was like playoff hockey," Bergland said. "We kind of wore them down."
