Sophia Forchas, a 12-year-old injured in the Annunciation Church shooting, is no longer listed in critical condition.

Christine Hill, a spokesperson for Hennepin County Medical Center, where Sophia is hospitalized, confirmed she is now listed in serious condition.

The hospital defines serious condition as, “Acutely ill with questionable prognosis; vital signs may be unstable, not within normal limits. Indicators questionable, chance for improved prognosis.”

It was almost a week ago that the neurosurgeon caring for Sophia told reporters in a news conference that she may become the third fatality in the shooting that also injured a total of 21 people, including 18 children. Fletcher Merkel, 8, and Harper Moyski, 10, were killed.

But Dr. Walt Galicich expressed optimism for the girl, calling it a “miracle” she maintained a chance at survival 10 days after the shooting.

“It’s day by day. I can’t tell you how it’s going to end,” Galicich said at the time. “We’re trending in the right direction at this point.”

Sophia was shot in the head and suffered damage to an important blood vessel. Galicich said there was no benefit to removing the bullet.
