THIS JUST IN: All signs point to Matt Guerrier and Oswaldo Arcia being called up from Class AAA Rochester in time for tomorrow's series finale against Cleveland.
Guerrier, who is coming back from August surgery to repair a flexor mass in his elbow, had an out clause in his contract if he wasn't called up by tomorrow. Apparently, the former Kent State student is on his way to Cleveland as of this writing.
Arcia was in the original lineup but was a late scratch, a sign that he's on his way too. It won't take long for either player to get here, since Rochester is in Columbus this week.
It will be interesting to see how the Twins make room for Guerrier, who has to be added to the 40-man roster. Keep checking back to www.startribune.com after the game for updates.
Back to original programming....
With two healthy bench players, Gardy needs another position player. He also wants to go back to 12 pitches. That should be Oswaldo Arcia, who is batting .333 in eight games at Class AAA Rochester. He definitely would be in the starting lineup today if he was here. The Twins are starting Eduardo Escobar in the outfield today, for goodness sakes. Props to Escobar for hitting well enough to force his way into the lineup somewhere, but it should be somewhere in the infield.
The Twins also should dig into this Mauer situation. He is going to play catch before the game to see how his sore back feels. But they should be prepared to DL him if he's still feeling too much discomfort. The game is hard enough to play when healthy, how can an athlete play with a sore back? DL him and give him time to get right. That's just Dr. Neal's opinion.
The Twins also are nearing a decision on righthander Matt Guerrier, who can opt out of his minor league contract on Thursday if he's not brought up to the majors. I spoke with Guerrier this afternoon, and it sounds like he wants to remain with the Twins and really doesn't want to consider the alternative. When asked if he was prepared to look elsewhere if he's not called up, Guerrier said, ``I don't want to, that's about it. I hope it doesn't come down to that.'' We'll see how this one plays out. Guerrier was pitching well during his stints with Class AA New Britain and the Red Wings, but he's given up home runs in each of his last two outings at Rochester.
So it should be interesting after the game. I can see Logan Darnell going back to Rochester, since he was here to save the bullpen. I can see Chris Herrmann getting sent down to find his swing. I can see Arcia coming back. Who else?
``Get down here fast after the game,'' Gardy told us.
