Pedestrian, dog on railroad tracks near Wadena killed by train

April 18, 2016 at 3:57AM

A pedestrian and a dog walking on railroad tracks in Wadena were struck and killed by a train Saturday night, closing all rail crossings in the central Minnesota town for three hours, the Wadena County Sheriff's Office said.

The incident happened about 6:10 p.m. east of Hwy. 71 in the town about 135 miles northwest of the Twin Cities.

More information about the pedestrian was withheld pending family notification.

The "young female" and the dog were hit by an eastbound Burlington Northern Santa Fe train. The train stopped after the pair were struck, closing the crossings. The railroad was investigating, along with Wadena police and the Sheriff's Office.

It was the second serious train-related accident Saturday in Minnesota. Hours earlier, a 10-year-old boy was in critical condition after he fell off a slow-moving train he was playing on in Minneapolis, and his leg was severed.
