Worst flooding since 2004 inundates Sri Lanka

Heavy rain and a brush from Tropical Cyclone Laila caused major floodingthroughout Sri Lanka last week.Flood waters are beginning to recede, and according to AccuWeather.commeteorologists, drier weather is in the forecast through this week.

Many of the flood-affected residents are starting to make their way backhome after nearly 600,000 were displaced in 14 districts. Colombo, Gampaha andKalutara were among the hardest hit by torrential rains and massivemudslides.This is the worst flooding Sri Lanka has seen since the tsunami that hit theregion in December 2004.

The same system is now bringing heavy rain to Bangladesh.

Cox's Bazar, located on the coast of southeast Bangladesh, has receivednearly 19 inches of rain since Friday, and 10.91 inches has fallen in the last24 hours.

Tropical Cyclone Laila stirred in the Bay of Bengal late last week, makinglandfall on Andhara Pradesh, India Thursday. The storm is responsible for atleast 23 deaths off the northeastern coast of India.
