Numerous 911 calls to Woodbury police early Wednesday sent officers to a neighborhood where they found a small child badly hurt in the street and another also injured.

By the time officers had the situation under control in the 400 block of Lake View Alcove, a 32-year-old woman identified by the 911 callers as the mother was arrested and her two children, ranging from 4 to 6 years old, were hospitalized. Police said one child was in critical condition at Regions Hospital, and the other was also at Regions and recovering from moderate injuries.

Emergency dispatch audio disclosed that the child down in the street was a 6-year-old girl who was bleeding from the back of the head and had a broken arm.

Officers were met with brief resistance by the woman until they got her pinned on the ground and handcuffed, according to dispatch audio.

"We expect she will be formally charged [Thursday]," said Police Cmdr. John Altman, who declined to release the woman's identity.

According to police: About 12:45 a.m., a caller to 911 said a child in the neighborhood was being chased by a parent. Dispatchers were soon told the child, believed to be 6 years old, was with the caller and slightly injured. Multiple calls to 911 came in with screaming in the background. Officers arrived and found a second child down in the street and unresponsive. That child is believed to be 4 to 6 years old.

The mother was arrested nearby, and "there are no outstanding suspects being sought, and there is no further threat to the public," a police statement read. Officers secured the scene and began interviewing witnesses. Police have not shared specifics about the injuries to the children, and they have yet to identify any of the people involved.

Altman said that police "would like to recognize the neighbors and witnesses that phoned 911, intervened and shared their observations with officers and detectives. ... The calls, observations and discussions had with Woodbury Public Safety in this case are all essential elements for the best possible outcome given these tragic circumstances."
