A Minneapolis woman who died while scuba diving at Square Lake near Marine on St. Croix on Thursday has been identified as Stephanie R. Smith, 58, of Minneapolis.

The cause of death has not been determined, said Cmdr. Cheri Dexter of the Washington County Sheriff's Office. Investigators are awaiting results from an autopsy.

Deputies were called to the Golden Acres Campground about 4:15 p.m. Thursday and found CPR being performed on Smith. She was pronounced dead at the scene.

Square Lake is well-known for its clarity, and is a major attraction for scuba divers and swimmers. It is 68 feet deep at its lowest point, lake maps show.
