A 53-year-old woman was stabbed to death in a northeast Minneapolis apartment, and a 51-year-old man believed to be in a relationship with her was jailed early Friday, police said.

The stabbing occurred about 11:15 p.m. Thursday in an upstairs apartment on the 2500 block of Central Avenue NE. When officers arrived, they found the woman dead, police said in a statement.

The woman's identity has not been released.

Arrested at the scene and booked into the county jail on suspicion of murder was a man who lives at the address, according to jail records.

The suspect has a long history of mostly minor crimes involving trespassing, disorderly conduct and drinking alcohol in public. He also has convictions for assault and drug possession.

"Officers in the 2nd Precinct will be reaching out to residents and door-knocking in the area in the coming days to talk with neighbors about domestic violence," police said in their statement.
