A woman "trying to get across the tracks before the train" in east-central Minnesota was fatally struck shortly after midnight Wednesday, authorities said.

The incident occurred about 12:40 a.m. in the heart of Hinckley, where the tracks cross Main Street E., according to the Pine County Sheriff's Office.

Rescue personnel arrived and determined that the woman was already dead, the Sheriff's Office added.

"A witness reported that the female had been running, trying to get across the tracks before the train" and was hit by the southbound Canadian Pacific train, a Sheriff's Office statement read.

The crossing arms and signals were functioning properly, the Sheriff's Office added.

The identity of the victim was being withheld pending notification of family.
