A woman was fatally stabbed Tuesday in St. Paul, and a suspect was later arrested, police said.

Sgt. Mike Ernster said that at 5 p.m. police were called on a report of a stabbing inside an apartment on the 100 block of Edmund Avenue West.

Police arrived to find a female suffering from a stab wound. She was transported to Regions Hospital, where she died from her injury.

Ernster said officers are processing for evidence and interviewing witnesses. He said the medical examiner will identify the victim.

Investigators are looking into who lived at the apartment and how the suspect and victim are related.

Earlier Tuesday, police responded to an attempted robbery on 5th and Wacouta near Mears Park.

Ernster said the victim is a concealed carry permit holder.

"The victim defended himself by shooting the suspect," Ernster said.

The suspect suffered noncritical injuries. No arrests have been made.
