A woman is in serious condition after firefighters rescued her from a house fire early Sunday morning in north Minneapolis.

Firefighters were called to 1001 James Av. N. at 2:52 a.m. on Sunday. On arrival, they began fighting the fire on the first floor of the two-story home. As they worked on the first floor, they learned that someone might still be on the second floor, said Deputy Chief Don Leedham.

"It was extremely hot — we were trying to do the search from the bottom up, but we realized we couldn't make it that way," Leedham said. "So our people went through the second-floor window, found her in the bed and brought her out through the window."

The woman, 49, was unconscious but breathing when rescued, Leedham said. She was listed in serious condition Sunday night in the burn unit at Hennepin County Medical Center. Her name has not been released.

Investigators have not determined the cause of the fire.
