St. Paul police are investigating after a woman was found dead inside a North End residence Sunday afternoon.

Officers were called to a townhouse in the 1500 block of Jackson Street around 2 p.m. on a report of an overdose, said Sgt. Natalie Davis. Upon arrival, officers found a woman dead in the basement with physical injuries apparently suffered during an assault.

The Ramsey County medical examiner has since ruled the woman's death a homicide, but her exact cause of death is not immediately clear. The victim was described only as a 36-year-old female on emergency dispatch audio. Authorities have not yet released her name, though police say she did not live in the townhouse where she died.

Investigators interviewed and released multiple people in the house at the time she was found. The killing is not believed to be a random act of violence.

In an unrelated incident Sunday night, officers were called to the 800 block of Orange Avenue in the Payne-Phalen neighborhood, where they found a 32-year-old man suffering from multiple gunshot wounds inside a nearby apartment. He was transported to St. Paul's Regions Hospital in critical condition but is expected to survive.

No arrests have been made in either case.

Anyone with information is asked to call the St. Paul Police Department's homicide unit at 651-266-5650.

Correction: Previous versions of this story incorrectly reported that the death of a woman found in a St. Paul residence was the city's seventh homicide of 2021. Because the woman's fatal injuries were sustained in Brooklyn Park, it does not count toward the city's homicide total.
