A woman stepped off a curb in the middle of the night in St. Cloud and was fatally run over by a vehicle on the well-traveled road, authorities said.

The incident occurred about 4:20 a.m. Wednesday along Stearns County Road 75 near Greenway Road, according to police.

Police said the woman was 19 years old. Her identity has not been released.

The driver, Mohamed Abdi Egal, 59 of St. Cloud, was not hurt.

Egal was traveling north on County Road 75 in the left-hand lane and hit the woman just after she "stepped off of the center median in front of his vehicle," the police statement read.

"That section of the roadway is quite dark," a statement from police read, "and Egal stated he did not see the victim before impact."

Egal immediately stopped, as did another driver, police continued. Emergency responders declared the woman dead at the scene.

Egal, who was on his way home from work, did not display any signs of impairment and has been cooperating with the investigation, according to police.
