A Wisconsin man died Friday afternoon after diving off a dock into shallow water in Big Twin Lake near St. Croix Falls, Wis., the Polk County Sheriff's Office said.

The victim was Ron Carlson, 52, who lived near St. Croix Falls, police said.

"Our assumption is he had a broken neck," said Capt. Steve Smith, of the Sheriff's Office.

Carlson, who had two children, was a retired postal worker and U.S. Army major, a friend said.
