Wis. Sikhs pay tribute to victims killed last year

MILWAUKEE — Officials at the Sikh (seek') Temple of Wisconsin say they're healing from last year's shooting rampage with the help of family, friends and the community.

Several officials spoke Friday at a special remembrance at the federal courthouse in Milwaukee. It was the first in a series of events honoring Monday's one-year anniversary of the day a gunman killed six worshippers before killing himself.

Dr. Kulwant Dhaliwal says he hopes the forum will raise awareness of Sikh values and honor the lives of those who died. He says the best tribute is for all to live in the Sikh spirit of "Chardi Kala" (CHAR-dee kah-LAH'), or eternal optimism.

Dr. Harcharan (har-chah-RON') Gill says the victims were heroes. He introduced all the victims' relatives, who lit candles in their loved ones' memories.
