ELKHORN, Wis. — Sheriff's deputies fatally shot a 39-year-old Elkhorn man Thursday who approached them with a shotgun taken from a squad car he had stolen after beating his mother's boyfriend, the Walworth County sheriff's office said.
Wis. man who stole squad fatally shot by deputies
Jeremiah Krubert refused commands to drop the weapon, according to a statement from Sheriff David Graves. All three deputies fired their guns, and Krubert died at the scene.
The incident began when deputies first were called to a home invasion in the Town of La Grange about 2:45 a.m. Krubert allegedly had entered his mother's home in southeastern Wisconsin and beaten her 54-year-old boyfriend there with a pipe, Graves said.
A deputy found Krubert trying to leave with the man's truck. Krubert confronted the deputy with an edged weapon, and that deputy fired his gun, the sheriff said.
Krubert stole the deputy's car and crashed after a brief chase. He got out of the car with the squad car's shotgun and walked toward the deputies, Graves said.
"At this time three other deputies discharged their firearms and Jeremiah fell to the ground. He was pronounced dead at the scene," the sheriff's statement said.
No deputies were hurt. All four deputies are on administrative duties, which is standard following officer-involved shootings, Graves said.
The Wisconsin Department of Justice's Division of Criminal Investigation is investigating, with help from the Walworth County sheriff's office.
The man who was beaten suffered extensive damage to his skull and face. He first was taken to Lakeland Medical Center, but because of the severity of his injuries, he was transported to a health care facility in the Milwaukee area, the sheriff said.
