Winter Officially Begins Today

The official start to winter is today, recent cold outbreaks and the latestEastern blizzard aside.The precise time for winter's start is 12:47 p.m., EST. At this time, the timeof the Winter Solstice, the sun will stand directly over the Tropic ofCapricorn at some location in the Western Hemisphere.

Coincidentally, this same instant in time will mark the actual start of summerin the Southern Hemisphere, where the seasons are offset by six months fromthose of the Northern Hemisphere.
