Well, that was fun while it lasted.

Speculation that Antoine Winfield possibly could return to Minnesota if released by Seattle ended Saturday evening when Fox's Jay Glazer reported that Winfield instead will retire.

Seahawks coach Pete Carroll confirmed the news in a tweet.

Winfield played 14 seasons, including the last nine with the Vikings. He will be remembered as one of the best tackling cornerbacks in the NFL and a consummate professional.

Reports surfaced Saturday morning that the Seahawks planned to cut Winfield, who signed a one-year deal in Seattle after being released by the Vikings.

Winfield ultimately decided to retire.
