Wine of the Week: 2014 Weingut Hopler "Pannonica"

2014 Weingut Höpler "Pannonica"

Leave it to the ever-clever wine folks in Austria to concoct a cool and unusual blend using their signature white grape, grüner veltliner. The 2014 Weingut Höpler "Pannonica" ($15) combines grüner, chardonnay and pinot blanc, and the result is predictably lush and rich but minerally and vibrant. The nose boasts pear and white pepper, and a smooth, harmonic array of fruit and spice flavors tickle the palate all the way through a persistently refreshing finish. Grilled pork (think chops or tenderloin), especially with some vibrant seasonings or other flavors in a marinade, would rock with this wine; ditto hearty vegetables, either roasted or grilled.
