Some wines are best classified as "crowd pleasers," not profound or super-complex but delicious, and approachable enough for newbies and stout enough for cork dorks. The 2014 Waterbrook "Mélange" Columbia Valley Founder's Red Blend ($15) is just such a gem, perfect for holiday parties or just sipping by the fire. A blend of almost countless grapes (with merlot, cabernet sauvignon and syrah predominating), this Washington red is packed with cherry/berry flavors plus some darker fruit and a touch of coffee. The tannins and acidity are seamless, the finish hearty and long. Go for some roasted or braised meat, or just enjoy it as a "cocktail wine."

Available at Lakeridge (Golden Valley and Vandais Heights), Surdyk's, Rum River, Andy's Crossroads (Rochester), MGM (Mankato and St. Peter) and elsewhere. BILL WARD
