2014 Chateau de la Greffiere Mâcon-Serrières

The gamay grape is most associated with Beaujolais, but the nearby Mâconnais region provides some swell renditions as well. The 2014 Chateau de la Greffiere Mâcon-Serrières ($20) boasts, among other assets, lovely red fruit, herby notes, spot-on acidity and a fresh but bold finish. This kind of wine makes it especially hard to understand why the dukes of Burgundy once tried to ban the gamay grape (it was from Germany, but still … ). Although lighter in body, this hearty red has enough oomph to play well with beef or lamb stews, not to mention roasted fowl and winter veggies.

Available at Top 10 St. Louis Park, Excelsior Vintage, Zipps, Thomas, France 44 and Henry & Son.
