2013 Viña Marty "Ilaia" Carmenere

Finally, it seems, Chile is poised to join neighboring Argentina as a source for hearty, affordable reds in this market. Among many recent additions, the 2013 Viña Marty "Ilaia" Carmenere ($15) is an exemplar. Rich red fruit and perfectly ripe tannins make for a hearty mouthful of goodness. I especially loved the spiciness on the nose and the chocolate notes on the palate. The finish is lengthy and silky. Winemaker Pascal Marty was sent to Chile a couple of decades ago to bring French quality to one of the world's southernmost grape-growing regions, and his efforts have (sorry) borne fruit. Enjoy this with roast chicken or pork or winter squashes, or just as a late-afternoon sipper.

Available at France 44, MGM Chaska, Vinifera and Dennis Brothers.
